How to apply
The steps to apply yourself. Free: you don’t need to pay anyone.
Required Documents
Usually the details gov.gr already holds about you are enough.
Step by step
- 1
Check if you qualify
The benefit is for mothers insured with e-EFKA — private-sector employees, freelancers, self-employed women and farmers — and starts right after maternity leave ends (for employees, or after the leave equivalent to reduced hours or annual leave, if you take those first). You do not need to be registered as unemployed with DYPA. Public-sector staff receive the special leave from their own employer.
- 2
Gather the required documents
Employees need an Employer Statement for the special leave (and so does the father, if you transfer months to him). Your maternity-allowance and contribution-status data are pulled automatically from e-EFKA; a copy of the maternity-allowance decision is needed only if that fails or if you are insured with a fund outside e-EFKA. Adoptive mothers attach a document proving the date the child joined the family, e.g. a certificate of placement with an adoptive family or an adoption court ruling.
- 3
Apply in time
The application is submitted online only, with your TaxisNet credentials, at parentalbenefits.dypa.gov.gr. Employees: within 60 days of the start of the special leave. Freelancers, self-employed women and farmers: within 2 months of the day after the maternity allowance is credited (adoptive mothers: from the child joining the family or the adoption ruling becoming final); the benefit then starts on the 1st of the month after you apply.

What happens after you apply
DYPA checks your details and issues a decision, which you can see in your online account or collect from the DYPA office. The benefit is paid monthly for up to 9 months. For employees it equals the minimum wage in force, plus holiday bonuses and leave allowance; half of that if, in the six months before your pregnancy leave, you worked up to 4 hours a day or up to 13 days a month on average. For non-employees it equals the minimum wage. For employees it stops if the employment ends (unless a new job follows straight away) or if you work for the employer that granted the leave.
- 5
Transferring months to the father
Up to 7 of the 9 months can be transferred to the father, whether he is a private-sector employee or a freelancer, self-employed or a farmer, provided the mother herself is eligible. Employed mothers can transfer months without first taking any part themselves, and the parents can alternate; non-employed mothers must first take at least the first 2 months themselves. The father also applies on the same platform.

What it is
The Special Maternity Protection Benefit is paid by DYPA (Public Employment Service) for up to 9 months, for raising the child, immediately after maternity leave or the maternity allowance. It is available to mothers insured with e-EFKA (Electronic National Social Security Fund) — biological mothers, presumed mothers (surrogacy) and adoptive mothers, for a child up to 8 years old when the child joins the family — as well as same-sex spouses who have a child together, provided that: (a) they work in the private sector as employees (fixed-term or open-ended, full-time or part-time, including through a temporary employment agency) or as salaried lawyers, with an active employment relationship at the start of maternity leave and throughout the special leave, and have received the maternity allowance (pregnancy and childbirth, or childbirth only for presumed and adoptive mothers); or (b) they are freelancers, self-employed women or women farmers, have received the e-EFKA maternity allowance (for adoption: the child has joined the family) and are up to date with their insurance contributions when they apply and for as long as the benefit lasts; it concerns children born or adopted from 24.09.2023 onwards. For employees, the special leave starts on the day after maternity leave ends or, if taken first, after the leave equivalent to reduced working hours, regular annual leave or other statutory leave. Those who work in the public sector receive the special leave from their own employer. The monthly amount equals the current minimum wage (€920 from 1/4/2026, before contributions); for employees working part-time or on a rotation basis it is half (€460), and employees also receive holiday bonuses and leave allowance. The benefit is tax-free and cannot be seized. Up to 7 months can be transferred to the father, whether he is a private-sector employee or a freelancer, self-employed or farmer: employed mothers can do so without first taking any period themselves; non-employed mothers after taking at least the first 2 months themselves. The application is submitted online on the DYPA platform: by employees within 60 days of the start of the special leave, by non-employees within 2 months from the day after the maternity allowance is credited.
