How to apply
The steps to apply yourself. Free: you don’t need to pay anyone.
Required Documents
Usually the details gov.gr already holds about you are enough.
Step by step
- 1
Find out which allowance applies to you
OPEKA grants different welfare allowances depending on the type of disability (mobility, intellectual, visual, kidney disease, etc.), each with its own conditions. There is no general family income test, but there are limits on any pension or other benefits you receive — e.g. for severe disability the net pre-tax pension must not exceed €393.35 (from 1/1/2026) — plus insurance-status conditions.
- 2
Apply for disability certification at KEPA
If you do not already have a valid assessment, apply to the Disability Certification Centres (KEPA) of e-EFKA — online through the National Disability Gateway with your TaxisNet codes, or with help from a citizens' service centre (KEP) or Community Centre. After the examination, a Disability Assessment (G.A.) and a Disability Percentage Notification (G.A.P.A.) are issued. Note the date you filed the KEPA application — it determines any backdated payment.
- 3
Submit the benefit application to OPEKA
Within 4 months of the G.A.P.A. being issued, submit the benefit application at your municipality's Community Centre or an OPEKA Regional Office — this application is not filed online. Bring your ID, AMKA, the KEPA assessment and your account IBAN. OPEKA's electronic services page has the relevant information, and you can call the free 1555 helpline for guidance.
Open the page - 4
Wait for the decision and the first payment
If your application is approved and was filed on time, payment starts from the 1st of the month following the month in which you filed your KEPA assessment request — that is, with backdated amounts. The allowance is paid monthly into the IBAN you declared.
- 5
Renew your assessment before it expires
KEPA assessments are usually valid for a limited period. Before yours expires, file a new re-assessment request with KEPA so that payments are not interrupted. For any questions, the 1555 helpline is free and available 24/7.

What it is
OPEKA (Organisation for Welfare Benefits and Social Solidarity) provides 10 different disability welfare programmes, each with its own minimum disability percentage, conditions and amount (€178-€833/month). There is no single programme "for every certified disability" — check which programme applies to your case: severe disability 67%+ (“Financial Support for People with Severe Disabilities”, €338), deafness/hearing loss 67%+ (“Financial Support for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Persons”, €391), haemolytic anaemia/haemophilia/AIDS (“Financial Support for Hemolytic Anemia, Hemophilia and AIDS Patients”, €391/€753), cerebral palsy under 18 (“Financial Support for Persons with Cerebral Palsy”, €753), severe intellectual disability 80%+ (“Financial Support for Persons with Severe Intellectual Disability”, €569), blindness 80%+ (“Financial Support for Persons with Visual Disability”, €391-€753), paraplegia/quadriplegia/amputation 67%+ (“Financial Support Programme for Paraplegic/Quadriplegic/Amputee Persons”, €833), Hansen's disease (“Income Support for Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) Patients and the Cured”, €391/€753), mobility allowance for paraplegic/quadriplegic/amputee persons 80%+ (“Mobility Allowance for Paraplegic, Quadriplegic and Amputee Persons”, €178), and kidney disease/transplant (“Nutritional Allowance for Kidney Disease and Transplant Patients”, €391). All programmes require a valid KEPA (Disability Certification Centre) certification, and limits apply to any pension or other benefits the beneficiary receives (e.g. for severe disability the net pre-tax pension must not exceed €393.35 from 1-1-2026), as well as conditions on insurance status.
Announcement (Thessaloniki International Fair, 06/09/2026): the Prime Minister announced that from 1/1/2027 all disability allowances will be indexed permanently, so that they follow inflation and GDP growth. It has not been legislated yet; this page will be updated once it is published in the Government Gazette (FEK).
