Required Documents
Usually the details gov.gr already holds about you are enough.
Step by step
- 1
Check what reduction applies to your vehicle
The registration tax is a one-off tax paid when a vehicle is first registered in Greece — it is not the annual road tax. Fully electric (BEV) and zero-emission hydrogen vehicles pay no registration tax. Hybrids, including plug-in hybrids (PHEV), are exempt by 50% when CO2 emissions are 51 g/km or above, or by 75% when they are up to 50 g/km. The rate depends solely on CO2 emissions, not on the price of the car.
- 2
You do not submit an application yourself
The reduction or exemption is applied automatically by customs (AADE) during clearance of the vehicle, that is, before the registration certificate is issued. There is no separate application for the buyer to submit, and no deadline you need to meet.
- 3
If you are buying new from a dealer
The dealer or importer handles the customs clearance, and the price you are quoted already includes the registration tax as calculated. Before finalising the purchase, ask to see on the documents that the exemption or reduction matching the vehicle's CO2 emissions has been applied.
- 4
If you are importing a vehicle yourself
In practice most people work with a customs broker. The vehicle's documents (purchase invoice, type-approval certificate showing CO2 emissions) are submitted at customs, where the reduction or exemption is calculated. Check the tax settlement notice carefully before you pay, and ask for a correction if the emissions have been recorded incorrectly.

Note the change coming on 1/1/2027
From 1 January 2027 the exemption for hybrids becomes a flat 50%, regardless of CO2 emissions. If you are planning to buy a hybrid around that date, ask the dealer which regime will apply based on when your own vehicle clears customs.

What it is
Fully electric vehicles (BEV) and zero-CO₂ hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles pay no registration tax. Hybrid electric passenger cars, including plug-in hybrids (PHEV), are exempt from 50% of the registration tax when CO₂ emissions are 51 g/km or more and from 75% when emissions are 50 g/km or less. The reduction for hybrids depends only on CO₂ emissions. In particular, hybrid electric cars imported into Greece from 1/11/2025 to 31/5/2026 with CO₂ emissions of up to 75 g/km get a 75% exemption (art. 136(6a), from 25/6/2026). The exemption is applied at customs clearance of the vehicle. Legal framework: article 136 of the National Customs Code (Law 5222/2025, A΄134). Note: from 1.1.2027, under article 10 of Law 5313/2026 (A΄102), hybrid electric cars get a flat 50% exemption from the registration tax, regardless of CO₂ emissions.
