Christmas bonus and leave allowance calculator
For private-sector employees in Greece, monthly or daily paid. The calculator applies articles 135 to 142 and 213 of the Individual Labour Law Code (presidential decree 80/2022) and shows every step.
These are not state benefits
The Christmas bonus and the leave allowance are paid by the employer, not by the state. If your collective agreement or your own contract gives more, the more favourable terms apply.
Christmas bonus
One monthly salary or 25 daily wages for those employed for the whole period from 1 May to 31 December. Otherwise 2/25 of the salary or 2 daily wages for every 19 days. Paid by 21 December.
Leave allowance
Equal to the pay of the leave days, capped at 15 days' pay (half a salary) for the monthly paid or 13 daily wages for the daily paid. Paid together with the leave pay, at the start of the leave.
How the calculation works
- The Christmas bonus is based on the regular pay actually paid on 10 December (or on the termination date), including regular premiums (e.g. Sunday or night work), regular overtime and the leave allowance (article 138).
- Anyone not employed for the whole period gets 2/25 of the monthly salary or 2 daily wages for every 19 days of the employment relationship, and the matching fraction for fewer than 19 days (article 136 par. 3).
- Days of unjustified absence and unpaid leave do not count, nor do sick days paid by sickness benefit. Compulsory leave before and after childbirth counts (articles 136 par. 4 and 137 par. 5).
- The bonus can never exceed one salary or 25 daily wages (article 140).
- Paid by 21 December, in money only. The employer may hold it back until 31 December, never later (article 142 par. 1).
- Leave allowance: the pay of the leave days, up to 15 days' pay or 13 daily wages. A full year's leave (20 working days on a five-day week, 24 on a six-day week) is above that cap, so for a full year the allowance is the maximum. If the contract ends, you are owed a part, proportional to the time since hiring or the previous allowance (article 213).
What this calculator does not check
- Fixed-term and seasonal contracts and public-works staff: the law gives them 1 daily wage for every 8 daily wages (article 136 par. 5).
- The bonus for sick days: for those paid by sickness benefit, the insurance fund pays the matching bonus.
- More favourable terms of your collective or individual contract (article 141).
- Deductions: the calculator does not subtract social insurance contributions or tax.
- The leave allowance in the first year of work, when leave is granted pro rata: it is the pay of those leave days, up to the same cap.
- The Easter bonus (half a salary or 15 daily wages for 1 January to 30 April).
Points awaiting legal review
On these points the official texts give no clear answer. The calculator makes the choice described, until the legal review.
- The 4.166% (1/24) increment for the leave allowance: it is often added to the Christmas bonus, because the law counts the leave allowance as regular pay (article 138 par. 2(c)). We found this percentage in no official text, so the calculator does not add it.
- The article 142 par. 2 ceiling (100 times the general minimum daily wage for the Christmas bonus, unless a contract or custom gives more): it is unclear whether it still applies under today's minimum-wage system, so the calculator does not apply it. It only affects pay above that ceiling.
- Leave allowance on termination: the law says "proportional to the duration of the employment relationship". The calculator works it out as the maximum × months ÷ 12.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Christmas bonus paid?
Paid by 21 December, in money only. The employer may hold it back until 31 December, never later (article 142 par. 1).
How is the bonus calculated if I did not work the whole period?
2/25 of the monthly salary or 2 daily wages for every 19 days from 1 May to 31 December. Example: hired on 1 September (122 days) with a salary of 1,000 EUR: 1,000 × 2/25 × 122 ÷ 19 = 513.68 EUR.
Which pay counts for the bonus?
The Christmas bonus is based on the regular pay actually paid on 10 December (or on the termination date), including regular premiums (e.g. Sunday or night work), regular overtime and the leave allowance (article 138).
Do leave and absences count?
Days of unjustified absence and unpaid leave do not count, nor do sick days paid by sickness benefit. Compulsory leave before and after childbirth counts (articles 136 par. 4 and 137 par. 5).
How much is the leave allowance?
The pay of the leave days, capped at half a salary (15 days' pay) or 13 daily wages. With a full year's leave the allowance is the maximum: 600 EUR for a 1,200 EUR salary, 650 EUR for a 50 EUR daily wage.
