How to apply
The steps to apply yourself. Free: you don’t need to pay anyone.
Required Documents
Usually the details gov.gr already holds about you are enough.
Step by step
- 1
Check if the student qualifies for free transport
The Region transports public-school students free of charge when the distance from home to school exceeds the legal thresholds: 1,200m for primary school, 2,500m for middle school, and 4,000m for high school or vocational school, when transport is by special student pass on public transport or by the Region's or Municipality's own vehicles. When transport runs on a contracted route, the thresholds are 1,200m, 3,000m and 5,000m respectively. Students with disabilities are transported regardless of distance, while students up to the second grade of primary school are transported, for safety reasons, only on contracted routes.
- 2
Gather the required documents
You will usually need: a solemn declaration with the student's permanent home address, a copy of a recent utility bill (electricity, water or phone) in the parent's or guardian's name, and an identification document. The school certifies the distance, the enrolment, and that the student has not already received a special student pass. Ask the school for the exact list, as it can differ by Region.
- 3
Submit the application at the school
The application is submitted at the school the student attends, addressed to the responsible Regional Unit -- in person, by post, or by email. Submit it at the start of the school year so the student is included when the routes are planned.

The Region organises the transport
The headteacher records the eligible students and forwards them to the Regional Unit, which plans the routes -- by school bus, by KTEL bus, or with special student passes. Planning and awarding the routes can take a considerable amount of time. If transport is not feasible, the Region may instead approve a transport allowance.
- 5
Reapply every school year
The application covers one school year and is repeated at the start of the next one. If your home address or the school changes, tell the school right away so the route can be updated.

What it is
The Regions transport pupils of public primary and secondary schools free of charge when the distance from home to school exceeds the limits of Joint Ministerial Decision (JMD) 50025/2018: 1,200 m for primary school, 2,500 m for lower secondary school (gymnasio) and 4,000 m for upper secondary school (lykeio/EPAL), when transport is by special pupil passes on public transport or by the Regions' and municipalities' own vehicles. When transport is by public service contract (hired routes), the limits are 1,200 m for primary school, 3,000 m for gymnasio and 5,000 m for lykeio/EPAL. Pupils with disabilities are transported regardless of distance, while pupils up to the 2nd year of primary school are transported, for safety reasons, only under a public service contract. When transport is not possible, a transport allowance is paid. When there is no local school of the corresponding level or daily travel is not possible/practical, the competent Region may instead pay the pupil (through a parent/guardian) a meals-and-accommodation or rent allowance under the same JMD; this has been seen as rent (Region of Epirus, monthly) and as meals-and-accommodation (Region of the Ionian Islands, up to ~€2,400 per instalment). The application is submitted to the school the pupil attends, addressed to the competent Regional Unit, at the start of each school year.
