What it is
Since July 2024 the law lets every municipality pay a one-off cash grant when a child is born to a family of its permanent residents and registered citizens. The amount cannot exceed €3,000 per child.
It is not mandatory: each municipality decides, by a decision of its municipal council, whether it pays the grant, how much it pays and on what conditions (for example income limits, which child of the family, from which date of birth). So ask the Social Service of your municipality whether it pays the grant and what you need.
The grant is tax-free, cannot be seized, is not set off against debts (to the tax office, the State, social insurance funds, municipalities, regions or banks) and does not count towards the income limits of other social or welfare benefits. It is separate from the OPEKA Birth Allowance.
The municipalities of Agrafa, Almopia, Apokoronas, Aspropyrgos, Velventos, Voio, Gavdos, Doris, Irakleio (Attica), Kallithea, Corinth, Malevizi, Minoa Pediada, Nisyros, South Pelion, Prespes, Servia, Sintiki, Souli and Hydra have their own entries with the terms they have decided.
