What it is
Portable document S1 certifies that you are entitled to sickness benefits in kind (medical and hospital care, medicines) in the country where you live, when it differs from the country that insures you. It is not a cash allowance: the health system of your country of residence serves you as if you were insured there, and the country that insures you pays the cost.
It is usually needed by: - pensioners living in a country other than the one paying their pension; - employed or self-employed people insured in one country and living in another (e.g. frontier or posted workers); - their family members living in another country.
e-EFKA issues S1 to its insured persons, their family members and its pensioners. You hand the S1 to the health-insurance institution of the country where you live, to register there. If you go for planned treatment in another country you need form S2; for a temporary stay, the European Health Insurance Card.
