Check whether you are eligible for the Academic ID
Eligible are first-cycle university students (for the years of the study programme plus 2), second-cycle students without another postgraduate degree, third-cycle (PhD) students up to 5 years, Erasmus students, and trainees at public IEK institutes under the Ministry of Education up to age 22.

Activate your institutional account
Your department's secretariat gives you a username and password when you enrol. After activation it usually takes a little while for the Academic ID system to connect with your institution's records.

Apply at academicid.minedu.gov.gr
Log in to the platform with your institutional credentials, check that your details are correct, upload a recent photo and choose the pick-up point that suits you.

Wait for approval from the secretariat
Your department's secretariat reviews and approves the application. Once the card is issued, you are notified by SMS and email with your application number and the PIN you will need to collect it.

Collect your card
Go to the pick-up point you selected with your police ID card, your application number and your PIN. Issuing the card is free — only a reissue due to loss, theft or damage costs 3.10 euros. You can also add the Academic ID to the Gov.gr Wallet app.

Use the card when buying tickets
Show your Academic ID at the ticket counter or during ticket checks. This is a reduced fare, not free travel: the discount is 50% on urban transport in the city where your department is based and 25% on urban transport in the rest of the country. The same rates apply on intercity coaches (KTEL) and trains — 50% for the route between your department's city and your permanent residence, and 25% for other routes. It is valid for one year, from 1 September to 31 August, and stops being valid if you graduate, do military service or interrupt your studies.

What it is
The Academic ID is issued free of charge and online. NOTE: the card and the discount are NOT the same thing. The discount comes with the «Special Travel Card» (Δελτίο Ειδικού Εισιτηρίου) marking on the ID. It is for: full-time first-cycle students who do not already hold a university degree, for the programme years plus two (double for part-time study); master's students who do not already hold a master's degree, for the programme duration; doctoral candidates who do not already hold a doctorate, for 5 years from enrolment; Erasmus students at a Greek university; and trainees of public vocational institutes (IEK) of the Ministry of Education aged up to 22. Teaching, administrative, technical and research staff get an Academic ID without the right to a reduced fare. With the card you pay at most 50% of the normal fare on urban transport in the city where you study and on intercity road and rail routes between your study city and your place of permanent residence, and at most 75% on all other urban and intercity public transport in the country. If you stop being a student, the entitlement ends automatically. For exact fares, ask the transport operator (KTEL coaches, urban transport, railway).
