What it is

When a kindergarten, primary or secondary pupil has a serious short-term or chronic health problem that keeps them from travelling to and attending school, the state can provide free teaching at home. The parents apply to the child's school, the school forwards the request to the Directorate of Primary or Secondary Education, and the Director of Education approves it. A recent, reasoned medical opinion from a public body stating how long the child must stay at home is required. Teaching may also be given remotely. It is not necessarily given by a special-education teacher, unless the local KEDASY assessment centre recommends it. In lower and upper secondary school, end-of-year and final exams follow the rules for privately taught pupils («κατ' ιδίαν διδαχθέντες»). Home teaching does not apply to the 2nd and 3rd year of day and evening vocational upper-secondary schools (EPAL) or to the 2nd-4th year of the upper-secondary level of Unified Special Vocational Schools (EN.E.E.GY.-L.).
