Announced, not yet passed: higher birth allowance from the fourth child

By myepidoma editorial team

A Ministry of National Economy and Finance bill tabled in Parliament provides, in article 23, that the birth allowance will be «four thousand five hundred (4,500.00) euros for the fourth child, increased cumulatively by one thousand (1,000.00) euros for each subsequent» child. Today the amount for the fourth and every later child is «three thousand five hundred (3,500.00)» euros. The amounts for the first to the third child do not change. The increase covers births «from 1 January 2026 onwards». The bill has not been passed yet.

What it means for you

If your fourth or later child was born «from 1 January 2026» and you have already received the allowance at today's amount, the bill provides that the difference «is paid by 31.12.2026 without a new application»: in one go if you received the whole allowance, and pro rata if you received the first of the two instalments. In every other case the difference is paid with the allowance's two instalments; for the fourth child each instalment becomes «two thousand two hundred and fifty (2,250.00) euros». The exact payment date of the difference has not been announced. Until the law is passed and published in the Government Gazette (FEK), today's amounts apply.
