Required Documents
Usually the details gov.gr already holds about you are enough.
Step by step
- 1
Check that you meet the conditions
The child must have been born alive in Greece on or after 1 January 2020. The beneficiary is normally the mother (in special cases the father or the person with custody), provided she lives permanently and legally in Greece, with equivalent family income of up to €40,000 a year. There is no limit on the number of children. The benefit is paid by OPEKA.

Prepare your details — you don't upload documents
Income data is pulled automatically from the tax authority (AADE), based on the tax return for the year before the birth — so make sure you have filed it. You will need your Taxisnet credentials, your AMKA and the IBAN of an account you hold. In special cases (e.g. custody arrangements, residence details of a foreign parent) extra documents may be requested.
- 3
Submit the application within 3 months of the birth
The deadline is strict: three months from the child's birth. The application can be submitted digitally at the maternity hospital, together with the birth declaration, or later by yourself online with Taxisnet credentials, or in person at a Community Centre in your municipality.

Payment is made in two equal instalments
The first instalment is paid the month after the birth, provided the application is submitted and approved within the month of birth; the second is paid five months after the month of birth. If you submit late, the first instalment shifts accordingly — so don't leave the application until the last moment.

What it is
The Birth Allowance is paid once for every child born alive in Greece from 1/1/2020 and is scaled by the number of the family's dependent children after the birth: €2,400 for 1 child, €2,700 for 2 children, €3,000 for 3 children and €3,500 for 4 or more children. It is paid in two equal instalments (€1,200, €1,350, €1,500 or €1,750 respectively): the first in the month after the birth, provided the application is submitted and approved within the month of birth, and the second five months after the month of birth. The beneficiary is the mother (or the father/guardian in special cases) who lives permanently and legally in Greece, with equivalised family income of up to €40,000 a year. The application is submitted within three months of the birth through epidomagennisis.gr. There is no limit on the number of children.
Announcement (Thessaloniki International Fair, 06/09/2026): the Prime Minister announced an increase of €1,000 for each additional child in large families: €4,500 instead of €3,500 for the fourth child, €5,500 for a family with five children and so on, also for births from January 2026. It has not been legislated yet; this page will be updated once it is published in the Government Gazette (FEK).
