€19 Monthly Student Pass for Heraklion City Buses (Municipality of Heraklion – Region of Crete, 2026-2027)
Students of the University of Crete and the Hellenic Mediterranean University (ELMEPA) at their Heraklion schools will buy the Heraklion city-bus (Astiko KTEL) monthly unlimited pass for €19 instead of €45, from October 2026 to June 2027. The Municipality of Heraklion and the Region of Crete pay the difference.

The monthly passes will be sold by Astiko KTEL Heraklion during the academic year. How and from when they are sold has not been announced yet.

What it is
The Municipality of Heraklion and the Region of Crete subsidise the Heraklion city-bus (Astiko KTEL) monthly unlimited pass for students of the University of Crete and the Hellenic Mediterranean University (ELMEPA) who study at the Heraklion schools and are entitled to the student fare.
The pass costs €45 today. With a subsidy of €26 per pass (€16.90 from the Municipality and €9.15 from the Region, as each decision sets it) the student pays €19. The pass is valid for unlimited trips on every line within the city of Heraklion, not only to and from the universities. Up to 12,000 monthly passes are subsidised for October 2026 to June 2027, with 500 more passes possible as a donation from the KTEL.
The decisions were approved on 28-29/09/2026 and the Municipality will sign a contract with Astiko KTEL, which will sell the passes. The start of sales has not been officially announced yet. The decision sets no residence or municipal-registration condition.
