What it is
Private charitable foundation offer — not a state benefit. For the 2026-2027 academic year the Onassis Foundation awarded up to 80 scholarships for full-time Master's and PhD studies, abroad or in official joint programmes where one country is Greece. PhD candidates at a Greek public university doing part of their research abroad (at least 2 semesters) could also apply.
Who: holders of Greek citizenship and/or nationality (including Greek Cypriots and ethnic Greeks), or graduates of a Greek university with a Greek upper-secondary (Lyceum) diploma and a legal residence permit in Greece, whatever their citizenship; in the selected fields and specialisations of the call. Year of birth: 1991 or later for a Master's, 1986 or later for a PhD. Minimum degree grade 8.00/10 (for a PhD also 8.50/10 in the Master's), or being in the top 5% of graduates. A foreign-language certificate at the level the university requires (otherwise at least C1). Men must have completed military service or hold a legal deferment or exemption.
Duration 9 to 36 months (PhD extension up to 12 months). The scholarship is paid in advance every three months. Scholars may also claim up to €1,000 for printing and up to €2,000 for publishing their doctoral thesis.
Applications online, on the Foundation's Onassis Directory platform, until 28/2/2026; results were sent individually in July 2026. The next round (2027-2028) has not been announced yet and its terms may change.
