Instalment plans for debts to municipalities, regions and municipal water utilities

Since 29/06/2026 (Local Government Code, Law 5314/2026, Article 513), assessed debts of any kind to municipalities and regions can, at the debtor's request, before or after the payment deadline, be settled and paid in 2 to 48 monthly instalments. Each municipal or regional council sets a uniform, objective scale for the number of instalments by amount; for example the Municipality of Mylopotamos set up to 12 instalments for debts up to €500, up to 24 for €500.01–2,000, up to 36 for €2,000.01–5,000 and up to 48 for debts over €5,000. The settlement is decided by the treasurer for a principal of up to €50,000, by the municipal committee for €50,000–150,000 and by the council for larger amounts. Debts arising from contracts are not settled this way.

For Minimum Guaranteed Income recipients, the municipal or regional council may, by absolute majority, reduce or write off interest, surcharges and fines, and write off up to 50% of the principal.

Debts to a Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company (DEYA) are settled by decision of its general manager, for up to 5 years and up to 60 instalments (Law 5314/2026, Article 272). The settlement is lost if two instalments or two current water bills are not paid.

Apply to the treasury service of the municipality, the region or the DEYA. For debts over €5,000 to municipalities and regions there is also the out-of-court mechanism.
