Understand what this is — not a benefit you apply for
Energy Communities are groups of citizens, municipalities and businesses that jointly generate electricity from renewable sources. There is no central platform and no "apply" button for citizens: you can only take part if a community already operates near you and is accepting new members or subscribers.

Find out if a community operates in your area
Ask your municipality or region whether an energy community or citizen initiative exists and is accepting new participants for virtual net metering. Ask for their contact details and the community's statutes.

Check whether you can become a member
You usually do not need to own property: it is enough to live in the area and have the electricity account in your name. The law also provides that households below the poverty line or facing energy poverty can be included in virtual net metering. The exact terms are set by each community's statutes — ask for them in writing.

Sign a contract and give your meter supply number
You join by signing a membership or virtual net-metering contract with the community. You will be asked for the DEDDIE electricity supply number printed on your bill. The shared installation's output is then offset against your consumption and reduces your bill, provided the installation and your supply belong to the same electricity system.

Check any private offer carefully before signing
Some commercial offers are marketed as an "energy community". Before signing, read the commitment period, the entry cost and the exit terms, and keep a copy of the contract. No contract guarantees a specific amount of savings.

What it is
Law 5037/2023 established two new legal entities: Renewable Energy Communities (KAE) and Citizen Energy Communities (EKP). RES stations and storage systems installation is permitted. Virtual energy offsetting (virtual net billing, Law 5106/2024) for covering energy needs of household consumer-members. Over 1,700 registered communities, authentic schemes >7.5 MWp (mainly photovoltaics). Installation possible in common areas, apartment rooftops, or owned fields.
