How to apply
The steps to apply yourself. Free: you don’t need to pay anyone.
Required Documents
Usually the details gov.gr already holds about you are enough.
Step by step
- 1
Check whether you meet the conditions
The e-EFKA maternity benefit is for directly insured employees who have at least 200 days of insurance within the two years before the birth and who stay away from work for the whole benefit period. It covers 119 days in total: 56 days before the birth (pregnancy) and 63 days after it (post-natal). If the birth is premature, the unused days are carried over to the period after the birth.

Ask your employer for the leave certificate
Most documents are retrieved electronically by the system: the doctor's certificate of the expected due date and the child's birth certificate. What you need to arrange yourself is mainly the certificate of leave from work, which your employer files electronically — separately for the 56 days before and the 63 days after the birth. If you are a foreign national, also have your residence document or permit at hand.
- 3
Submit the online application to e-EFKA
Apply online through e-EFKA's "Electronic Maternity Benefit Application" service, using your TaxisNet credentials. You submit it separately for the pregnancy part and for the post-natal part, within 8 months of the birth at the latest.

Wait for the decision and the payment
If your application is approved, the amount is paid into the bank account you have registered with e-EFKA. If it is rejected, you can lodge an appeal with the competent Local Administrative Committee within 30 days of being notified, by filing it at the e-EFKA local office that issued the decision.
- 5
Check the other maternity benefits too
Separately from e-EFKA, DYPA pays private-sector employees the supplementary maternity benefit and, after maternity leave ends, the special maternity protection benefit for up to 9 months. It needs its own application and has its own deadlines, so check with your employer or DYPA in good time.

What it is
e-EFKA (Electronic National Social Security Fund) pays directly insured employees maternity allowances (pregnancy and post-natal) for a total of 119 days (17 weeks): 56 days before and 63 days after the birth. In the case of a premature birth, the remainder of the pregnancy allowance is carried over to after the birth, so that the 119 days are completed. Conditions: at least 200 days of insurance within the two years before the birth, and absence from work during the period of the allowance. The daily amount equals 50% of the notional daily wage of the insurance class in which the insured woman is placed, based on the average earnings of her last 30 days of work in the immediately preceding calendar year, increased by 10% for each dependent family member, up to 40%. From 01.01.2026 the daily maternity allowance cannot be lower than €12.87 (the notional daily wage of the 1st insurance class). The application is submitted online through the "Online Application for Maternity Allowance" service, within eight (8) months of the date of birth. Separately from e-EFKA, DYPA (Public Employment Service) pays private-sector employees the supplementary maternity benefit (the difference between the e-EFKA allowances and the pay she would have received from her employer) and then the special maternity protection benefit for up to nine (9) months.
Adoptive mothers (adoption or fostering with a view to adoption, child up to 8) and intended mothers (surrogacy) get the post-natal allowance for 63 days, with 200 days of insurance in the two years before the child's placement (or the birth). They apply at the e-EFKA Local Directorate.
