Reduced Conscription Duration for Single-Parent/Orphaned Family Sons

The only or eldest son of a parent who has died, of an unmarried mother, of a widowed parent, or of a parent aged 70+ or with a disability of 67% or more serves a reduced 9- or 6-month term.

What it is

Under article 202 of Law 5265/2026, the following move, if they wish, to the reduced main military service:

9-month service: - the only or eldest son of a parent who has a disability of at least 67%, has reached the age of 70 or is widowed; - the only or eldest son of an unmarried mother, if he has not been recognised or adopted, or of a parent who has died.

6-month service: - the only or eldest son of parents who have died or both have a disability of at least 67%, or where one has died and the other has a disability of at least 67%; - the only or eldest son of an unmarried mother (not recognised or adopted) who has a disability of at least 67% or has died.

If the eldest son has been exempted from service for health reasons, the right passes to the next brother who is fit for service. When the transfer is based on a parent's disability, you submit a family status certificate and a valid disability certification to the competent Recruitment Office (Stratologia). The transfer is not revoked if the reasons cease after the request. Reserve officers, reserve officer cadets and auxiliary officers are not covered.
