Step by step
- 1
Find out how your municipality takes applications
For each disaster the municipality where the damaged home is located sets up, by mayor's decision, a three-member committee (finance, technical and social services) and announces where to apply. If the disaster was included in State Relief via arogi.gov.gr, the €600 and the repairs/household-goods aid are requested on the tax authority's platform, and only the supplements and the €4,500 at the municipality.

Apply within 45 days
Submit the application (form annexed to the decision) with the documents to the municipality within 45 days of the disaster. If the General Directorate for Natural Disaster Recovery (GDAEFK, ΓΔΑΕΦΚ) has already inspected the home, attach its re-inspection sheet instead of describing the damage.
Open the page - 3
Inspection of the home
The municipal committee checks that the home was hit and sets the degree of damage (A small, B medium, C major). If the General Directorate for Natural Disaster Recovery (GDAEFK, ΓΔΑΕΦΚ) has already inspected it, the degree follows its sheet (green, yellow or red building) and the committee does not inspect again.
- 4
Mayor's decision and payment
The mayor recognises the beneficiaries by decision, on the committee's recommendation. The municipality requests the funding from the General Directorate for Natural Disaster Recovery (GDAEFK, ΓΔΑΕΦΚ) within 3 months of the disaster and pays the amount into the IBAN you gave in your application.

What it is
A standing national social-protection programme (Legislative Decree 57/1973, Joint Ministerial Decision 33862/2019 as amended by JMD 31 EX/2023, Greek: ΚΥΑ 31 ΕΞ/2023) for households whose home was hit by a natural disaster: wildfire, flood, severe weather, landslide, earthquake and others. The aid is granted by the municipality where the damaged home is located and funded by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (General Directorate for Natural Disaster Recovery, GDAEFK, ΓΔΑΕΦΚ). It includes: (a) a €600 first basic-needs allowance for a household whose main home was hit and who cannot stay in it, plus €600 more for a large family and €600 more if the family includes one or more persons with a disability who receive a welfare disability allowance; (b) an allowance for simple repairs and/or replacing household goods of up to €6,000 per household for the main home (from €1,200 to €6,000 depending on household members, degree of damage and floor area), reduced by 50% for a second home; (c) €4,500 for each person who, injured in the disaster, was left with a permanent disability of 67% or more. Owners, tenants and people using the home free of charge can apply; the decision sets no income limit. The aid covers only living space and household goods (not auxiliary rooms, storerooms, shops, workshops or greenhouses) and cannot be seized. You apply to the municipality within 45 days of the disaster; a three-member municipal committee inspects the home (not needed if GDAEFK engineers have already inspected it) and the mayor recognises the beneficiaries by decision. Note: when a disaster is included in State Relief via arogi.gov.gr, the €600 first-needs aid and the repairs/household-goods aid are requested there (the tax authority's State Relief platform, «Κρατική Αρωγή»), and the municipality pays only the large-family and disability supplements and the €4,500 injury-disability aid (see «Fire Disaster Relief», «Flood Disaster Relief» and «Earthquake Disaster Relief»). Municipalities across Greece apply the programme, e.g. for the 31/07/2026 wildfire in Thisvi and Plataies (Municipality of Thebes), the floods of 21/01/2026 (Kropia and Marathon) and 5/12/2025 (Megara) and the August 2025 wildfires (Lavreotiki, Zakynthos, Erymanthos).
Current event: severe weather in Crete, 1–4/10/2026. The Region of Crete announced (7/10/2026) the start of state relief for the Regional Units of Lasithi, Heraklion, Rethymno and Chania. Households apply for an inspection and basic-needs aid only to their municipality, within 45 days of the disaster, unless the municipality announces another date. Businesses apply to their Regional Unit (the official in charge of the relief) as soon as possible and in any case within two months (in the Regional Unit of Heraklion by Friday 4 December 2026). Applications for inspections of farms of natural persons go only to ELGA (the Hellenic Agricultural Insurance Organisation).
