How to apply
The steps to apply yourself. Free: you don’t need to pay anyone.
Required Documents
Usually the details gov.gr already holds about you are enough.
Step by step
- 1
Check whether your municipality has a Social Pharmacy
Social Pharmacies are municipal facilities and do not operate in every municipality. They serve residents living in or at risk of poverty: uninsured people, insured people on very low incomes, homeless people, as well as legally residing third-country nationals, refugees and beneficiaries of international protection. Ask your municipality's Social Service or check its website, since each municipality sets its own criteria and opening hours.
- 2
Prepare your documents
Usually required: ID card or passport (plus residence permit for third-country nationals) for all adult members, the latest tax return (E1) with the assessment note, proof of residence in the municipality (e.g. a utility bill or lease), an unemployment card if you have one, and any disability certificate. Confirm the exact list with the Social Service, since applications with missing documents are usually not accepted.
- 3
File your application with the municipality's Social Service
The application is filed in person — or by an authorised representative — at the Social Service or at the Social Pharmacy of the municipality where you live. Many municipalities accept applications only during specific periods, following a public call for applications.
- 4
Wait for the assessment and the social inquiry
After you file, a municipal social worker assesses your file and usually carries out a home visit to establish your living conditions. Enrolment is not automatic: it is decided by the service on the basis of the municipality's criteria and the facility's capacity.
- 5
After enrolment: collection and reporting changes
Once enrolled, you receive free prescription medicines, medical supplies and parapharmaceutical products, depending on available stock, which comes mainly from donations by citizens, pharmacies and organisations. Psychosocial support is also offered. Enrolment is reviewed periodically, so inform the Social Service if your income, family composition or municipality of residence changes.

What it is
Social Pharmacies (Koinoniká Farmakeía) are municipal services (a "Basic Goods Provision Structure") that provide free prescription medicines, medical supplies and parapharmaceutical products. They are for residents of the municipality who live in poverty or are at risk of poverty: uninsured people and also insured people with very low income, homeless people, as well as legally resident third-country nationals, refugees and beneficiaries of international protection. Psychosocial support and referral to other social services are also provided. Admission follows an application and an assessment by the municipality's Social Service, with income as the main criterion (an identity card, tax return and tax assessment notice are usually required). Stock comes mainly from donations by citizens, pharmacies and organisations. The services are co-funded by the European Social Fund+ (ESPA 2021-2027). The exact criteria, supporting documents and opening hours are set by each municipality.
